Why an off-the-shelf Burke replacement is difficult

No foreign design is a simple ready-made substitute for Arleigh Burke, and even an imported starting point would need extensive US changes.

Question

Should the US Navy adopt an off-the-shelf design to replace the Arleigh Burke class?

Short answer

There is no simple off-the-shelf equivalent; even a Type 83-derived option would require major US adaptation and a difficult political decision.

Notes

Suitable off-the-shelf frigates exist, but a Burke-scale destroyer has a different capability and prestige burden. Type 83 might eventually offer a starting point, although the Constellation programme demonstrates how much an American derivative can diverge from its parent design. Buying a foreign destroyer would also be politically harder than importing a frigate after the Littoral Combat Ship failure. The deeper problem is that the United States delayed creating a successor and built too few Zumwalts to provide a domestic bridge.
