What would a Nelson-class version derived from the L3 or K3 designs look like?
Short answerIt would require a higher treaty limit or major cuts, probably losing a main turret and some secondary guns while carefully reducing armour.
NotesThe L3 and K3 studies carried 18-inch guns and displaced roughly 51,000 to 52,000 tons, requiring major cuts to fit a treaty battleship. The proposed exercise therefore assumes a 40,000-ton standard-displacement ceiling instead of the historical 35,000 tons. L2 may offer a more manageable starting point: deleting the higher aft X turret would save weight while leaving the lower Y turret. Removing a pair of 6-inch guns would weaken the broadside with little change to fire directly ahead or astern. The estimate also distinguishes normal displacement from treaty standard displacement before calculating the remaining reductions. Armour could be reduced while retaining hull length, with 25 knots as the desired minimum speed. These are tentative design choices, and the suggested ship depends on a different Washington treaty settlement.
