Is Tempest likely to be navalised as an eventual replacement for carrier-based F-35Bs?
Short answerProbably not; Tempest is the Typhoon-side replacement in Britain's two-fighter policy, while navalisation would add major cost and different design demands.
NotesA carrier-capable Tempest is very doubtful because navalisation would add substantial development cost. Britain traditionally manages two fast-jet fleets whose service lives overlap, with one maturing while the other approaches replacement. Tempest belongs to the Typhoon replacement path rather than the F-35B carrier role. Land and carrier aircraft also face different design priorities, including the salt-water environment, which makes a straightforward conversion a poor prospect. Additional British carrier aircraft are therefore more likely to be F-35Bs, especially if new LHDs expand the number of aviation decks.
