What armies borrowed from naval guns

Land forces borrowed heavy artillery and quick-firing breech ideas from naval practice without simply putting complete ship guns into tanks.

Question

What can be said about naval guns used on land and in tanks during the First World War?

Short answer

Naval artillery could serve ashore, while tanks mainly borrowed quick-firing mechanisms and gun ideas adapted to much smaller vehicle constraints.

Notes

Naval weapons could be used ashore as heavy artillery, but a tank installation faced very different limits. Armies were especially interested in quick-firing breech mechanisms for vehicle guns. The tank gun could be much shorter than the shipboard gun with which it was being compared. Borrowing a mechanism did not mean fitting a complete naval gun to a tank.
