Moskva and Kiev combine missile firepower with organic air defence

Soviet aviation cruisers put missiles forward and aircraft aft, giving surface groups both heavy shipborne weapons and their own fighter or helicopter cover.

Notes

The Moskva and Kiev families apply the same spatial logic as Tone on much larger Cold War platforms: weapons forward, machinery and command amidships, and aviation aft. Moskva emphasizes anti-submarine helicopters, while Kiev adds fixed-wing aviation to a heavily armed missile cruiser hull. Organic air defence can complicate an attack and protect a task group without using the world's best fighter. The Fleet Air Arm's Fulmar provides the comparison, showing how a modest aircraft can still work effectively with shipboard warning and weapons.
