Chapter · 45:21-47:43

Monarch's machinery, trial speed and cruising range

Eighteen Yarrow boilers and Parsons turbines powered a ship that exceeded its 21-knot design speed and offered a cruising range above 6,713 nautical miles.

Notes

Armstrong Whitworth built Monarch at Elswick, with eighteen Yarrow boilers and two Parsons direct-drive turbine sets. Each turbine set drove two shafts, giving the ship four shafts in total. Designed for 21 knots, she achieved 21.9 knots on trials under safe operating conditions. Her fuel capacity supported more than 6,713 nautical miles at ten knots, with space to carry slightly more fuel than the standard provision. Her accurate guns are linked to the builder's emphasis on armament and obtaining the best performance from its installations.
