Chapter · 41:03-43:00

The modified F3 as a treaty battlecruiser

A modified F3 design fits the proposed 42,000-ton and 15-inch-gun limits better than completing the G3 battlecruisers unchanged.

Notes

The British could theoretically complete the G3 hulls by redefining the difference between standard and full-load displacement and replacing their oversized guns. An enlarged F3 offers a cleaner solution because the design already sat closer to the proposed treaty limits. A roughly 40,000- to 42,000-ton standard-displacement ship could exceed 30 knots and carry nine, or perhaps twelve, improved 15-inch guns. Early G3 work might be converted to the F3 standard rather than discarded outright. The resulting design would be capable without becoming a disguised battleship and could be repeated for Royal Navy and Dominion orders.
