Information flow is part of ship survivability

Modern bridge systems compress the distance between command, navigation, engineering, and damage control, but those links must survive damage.

Notes

Modern bridges combine sensors, navigation displays, engine information, and direct communication with engineering spaces. Titanic's radio room, bridge, and machinery spaces were more separated, while slower message chains made coordinated action much harder. Modern integration makes information a component of survivability and creates a need for resilient alternate paths. One contemporary interpretation based on photographs suggests that an early hit on the cruiser Moskva disabled the power-control room, which also served as the damage-control center. This raises the question of whether the bridge or combat information center was equipped and organized to assume that function after the primary station was lost.
