The Marathons were a lighter development of the heavier Mersey class, probably shaped in part by the French Forbin class. They were second-class protected cruisers intended for presence duties on foreign stations, rather than opponents for the strongest enemy cruisers. Their protected deck measured between one and two inches, while six six-inch guns supplied the main battery. Quick-firing guns, machine guns, and two torpedo tubes completed the armament. Two ships were built for home service, and three received wood-and-copper sheathing to ease maintenance in tropical waters. The split shows how operating environment could produce meaningful differences within one class.
