Boilermaking, armour, and railways behind the shipyard

Laird brought iron shipbuilding in Birkenhead, while Cammell brought Sheffield metalworking and railway production.

Notes

The Laird side began with the Birkenhead Iron Works in 1824. John Laird recognized that the exacting methods used to make boilers could also produce reliable iron ships, beginning with an iron barge. The Cammell side developed from Sheffield iron and steel businesses that made armour, wheels, rails, and equipment for the London Underground. By the 1890s, Cammell's armour production and Laird's shipbuilding gave the two firms complementary strengths and a shared reputation for quality.
