British machinery exposes Italy's industrial constraint

Reliance on British turbines and boilers constrained Italian designs, revealed likely displacement, and created a wartime spare-parts vulnerability.

Notes

Italy funded impressive hulls and guns while neglecting the industrial base beneath them. British-supplied or licensed propulsion let Britain estimate horsepower, hull dimensions, speed, and displacement, limiting Italy's ability to conceal treaty violations. Italian technology transfer eventually produced domestic machinery, but that machinery is associated here with later reliability problems. Once Britain became an enemy, the earlier dependence complicated spare parts, maintenance, and any attempt to substitute domestic machinery.
