The two cruisers began in the private Armstrong and John Brown yards before completion at Chatham and Devonport. Their transfer was intended to save money and helps explain the long interval between launching and completion. Enterprise's twin turret added about 30 tons and shifted weight forward. Designers compensated to preserve the ship's trim.
