Cockatoo Island Dockyard built Brisbane, demonstrating that Australia could construct a modern light-cruiser hull. Equipment unavailable locally still had to be installed at Malta, exposing the limits of that industrial independence. Brisbane then patrolled the Indian Ocean for the German raiders Wolf and Seeadler. She also carried a Sopwith Baby, the first aircraft used from a Royal Australian Navy ship, combining presence patrols with an early experiment in shipboard aviation. Her 1935 retirement came close enough to the Second World War to prompt a conversion question. An anti-aircraft refit was conceivable but less attractive than modernising the newer and slightly larger C-class cruisers.

HMAS Brisbane links Australian shipbuilding with ocean patrols
Australian-built Brisbane required overseas fitting before searching for German raiders, pioneering RAN shipboard aviation, and illustrating the limits of later cruiser conversion.
