Why the SB2C Helldiver's reputation needs context

The opening distinguishes an adequate aircraft from a great one and asks whether the SB2C's troubled reputation fairly reflects what it was designed to do.

Notes

The opening separates the claim that the Helldiver was not terrible from any claim that it was great. The aircraft met its stated requirements and could perform its assigned work despite difficult development and early service problems. Its reputation suffered because it arrived beside exceptional aircraft and inherited comparisons with the combat-proven SBD Dauntless. An adequate design can look like a failure when expectations, missions, and competing aircraft have advanced beyond the specification it was built to meet.
