The aircraft statistics come from the same Swanborough and Bowers reference, allowing reasonably time-compatible comparisons between variants. The high-production SB2C-4 offered modest gains over the SBD but a much larger advance over the older SBC that informed its requirement. Range, maximum speed, cruising speed, climb, and ceiling figures show that the Helldiver was not simply shorter-ranged or universally inferior. The early SB2C-1 and SB2C-1C used less powerful engines and helped establish the negative first impression that followed the whole family. Later aircraft had substantially better performance and were built in far greater numbers, making variant and date essential to any fair assessment.

What the Helldiver's performance figures actually show
A consistent source comparison of range, speed, climb, and variants complicates claims that the SB2C was simply inferior to the Dauntless.
