Larger tail surfaces and fuel tanks, self-sealing protection, stronger armament, and hundreds of other corrections delayed entry into service even as factories eventually produced more than seven thousand aircraft across all variants. The Avenger, whose development began two years later, entered service first while those changes accumulated. The first SB2C-1 aircraft remained in the United States for training, while the SB2C-1C debuted from USS Bunker Hill against Rabaul in November 1943. Mechanically linked leading-edge slats improved low-speed control during carrier approaches. The aircraft's size, weight, and perceived range nevertheless shaped an unfavorable reception among crews before the later variants could establish their record.
