W.29 engine trials and the limits of control

Benz, BMW, Mercedes, and Maybach installations offered different power options, but the most powerful W.29 trial installation reduced maneuverability.

Notes

The three W.29 prototypes tested Benz, BMW, and Mercedes engines, and production aircraft also received several engine variants. Later orders included ten aircraft with BMW engines and thirty with Mercedes engines. One aircraft tested a 245-horsepower Maybach installation. It proved easier to fly but less maneuverable because the engine's power tended to overwhelm the available controls. A higher power rating therefore did not guarantee better handling with the existing control surfaces.
