How extra length changes hangar capacity

A rough hangar-layout calculation shows why extra length could add more F-35Bs than a small increase in beam.

Notes

The 155-by-34-by-7-metre hangar is wide enough for three F-35Bs abreast, so a small increase in beam would add little aircraft capacity. A fourth row would require a much larger increase in width. An illustrative calculation suggests roughly 30 additional metres of hangar length could accommodate about six more F-35Bs. Extra length would also provide more flight-deck space and room to maintain aircraft below. Accommodating roughly twelve additional aircraft would require a much longer ship, with about 60 extra metres suggested in this example.
