HMS Ashanti, a Type 81 Tribal-class frigate, opens the timeline as the first commissioned warship powered by gas turbines. Charles Gordon Curtis patented a gas turbine in 1899, Aegidius Elling produced useful surplus power in 1903, and further experiments included the Holzwarth impulse turbine and Nikola Tesla's design. Frank Whittle's attempts to interest the Air Ministry in turbojet propulsion show that the same core idea had an aviation path before the Second World War. Mature geared steam turbines and steadily rising steam pressures gave navies a capable alternative. Early gas-turbine concepts therefore had to wait for suitable materials, better efficiency, and practical marine experience.

Why gas turbines took decades to reach warships
A timeline from Curtis's 1899 patent to HMS Ashanti's 1961 commissioning shows why a promising engine did not quickly displace established marine power plants.
