The Abdiel class historically combined a light hull with about 72,000 shaft horsepower and could approach forty knots when lightly loaded. Replacing boilers and steam turbines with six early gas turbines could raise output toward 90,000 shaft horsepower. The weight margin might also permit the same dual-purpose weapons standardized on destroyers. The result would be an unusually fast minelayer whose speed supports insertion, supply, and withdrawal missions rather than serving as a paper performance figure alone.

Abdiel-class minelayers become extreme high-speed ships
An already fast minelayer design illustrates how turbine power could produce exceptional operational speed without sacrificing general-purpose armament.
