The G3 was the longer, much faster successor to the battlecruiser line, while the N3 exchanged machinery power and speed for heavier armor and nine 18-inch guns. Their standard displacements differed by only about 500 tons. Their beams were also the same, so the shorter N3 gained little dockyard flexibility from sacrificing speed. A more useful N3 might have retained its armor while adopting three shafts and roughly 90,000 horsepower for a speed near 28 knots.

G3 speed versus N3 gun power
The two designs used nearly equal displacement for sharply different combinations of speed, armor, and gun caliber.
