Why turning Wasp into another Yorktown was not simple

A larger USS Wasp promises Yorktown-class capability, but converting the design late would demand major structural changes.

Question

Should USS Wasp have been converted into a full-size Yorktown once the treaty system ended, and how would she have performed?

Short answer

She would have been much more capable and survivable, but the late structural conversion would have been difficult enough that it might not have worked cleanly.

Notes

A full-size Wasp would have the survivability, structural strength, and air-group capacity of a Yorktown-class carrier. Changing the design after procurement was already under way, however, would require extensive hull reconstruction. The work would be slow and difficult, and the result might still fail to function cleanly as an enlarged Yorktown.
