Forests as strategic naval resources

Oak forests, Scandinavian mast timber, and North American supplies are framed as strategic resources that shaped maritime expansion.

Notes

HMS Victory's timber chronology opens onto the geopolitical value of forests. In this account, timber helps explain why expanding states sought control of wooded regions during the wars of Louis XIV and Napoleon. Naval builders needed old, well-shaped trees whose natural grain suited particular structural jobs rather than interchangeable loads of lumber. British surveyors and buyers therefore searched beyond domestic woods for Scandinavian mast poles and North American timber. Territorial ambition and imperial access were tied directly to the material requirements of fleets.
