Why easier flight controls do not settle the flying-car problem

Mechanical failure and human judgment remain obstacles even if personal aircraft become easier to control.

Question

Could aircraft controls become user-friendly enough for flying to be as common as driving?

Short answer

Easier controls do not remove the consequences of failure or the difficulty of judging hazards in three dimensions.

Notes

Easier controls alone are not expected to make personal aircraft as common as cars. A failed car remains on the ground, while an aircraft failure creates an additional danger. Road users already vary in situational awareness and their ability to recognize hazards. Allowing the same decisions in three dimensions increases the demands placed on those users.
