Catalina production scale and service control

The Catalina's multinational service and production scale show both its adaptability and the institutional divide that kept British maritime flying boats under RAF control.

Notes

The Consolidated PBY Catalina served with the United States Navy, the United States Army Air Forces, the Royal Air Force, and the Royal Canadian Air Force, among many operators. British use therefore did not mean Royal Navy control, reflecting the interwar settlement that placed major naval-air capabilities with the RAF. More than three thousand Catalinas were built, far exceeding the roughly two hundred H6Ks discussed immediately beforehand. That production depth mattered because wide-area reconnaissance depends on having enough aircraft to sustain patrol patterns, not merely on the range of an individual machine.
