A large floating dry dock can take six years

The Atlas dry dock provides a real comparison for the design and construction time Britain should expect before new submarine-maintenance capacity appears.

Question

How long does it take to build a large floating dry dock?

Short answer

A recent large example took about six years from order to christening, and a new British design study could add risk before construction starts.

Notes

A domestic floating-dock project would first need design work unless Britain accepted an off-the-shelf design. The large Atlas dock built by Bollinger for General Dynamics provides a recent comparison. Atlas was ordered in 2019 and christened in 2025, giving a roughly six-year interval. Maintenance infrastructure therefore has to be ordered before a fleet availability crisis becomes acute.
