Floating-dock experience points toward Mulberry harbors

Royal Navy experience with large floating structures anticipated some of the engineering ideas used for the Normandy Mulberry harbors.

Notes

The Royal Navy used floating docks alongside fixed graving docks to meet repair demand. Britain built more floating docks in both world wars and accumulated experience with large pontoons that could flood down, rise, and remain positioned for ships. That engineering tradition anticipated some of the concrete pontoons and floating systems used for the Mulberry harbors after the Normandy landings. Dry docks and artificial harbors served different purposes, but mobile naval infrastructure created transferable knowledge for amphibious logistics.
