Chapter · 52:50-56:13

Fleet Air Arm types and assumptions not yet tested by war

The imagined war accelerates decisions among Swordfish, Albacore, Barracuda, Fulmar, and navalized Spitfire concepts while leaving some historically unsuccessful aircraft doctrines untested.

Notes

The Fleet Air Arm would need both a carrier fighter and a strike-aircraft succession plan. Possible choices run from Swordfish through Albacore and Barracuda, alongside a crash order for Fulmar or renewed work on a folding-wing naval Spitfire concept. Land-based Mosquitoes, Blenheims, Spitfires, and Hurricanes would still compete for resources. Blenheim squadrons were still designated as fighters at Crete in 1941 and formed much of Singapore's fighter force. Because the European air war has not yet disproved ideas such as the turret fighter or Blenheim fighter, procurement begins from a different set of surviving assumptions.
