Firepower, speed, and survivability as a design framework

Firepower, speed, and survivability provide the design framework for explaining why the 74-gun ship met so many naval requirements.

Notes

The 74-gun ship is assessed through three linked requirements: firepower, speed, and survivability. In a wooden warship, survivability depends on timber thickness, hull strength, positive buoyancy, and enough material to absorb damage. Later armored ships rely more directly on armor and internal subdivision. This framework explains why gun count alone cannot determine whether a warship design suits its navy.
