The N.10 establishes Fairey's design pattern

An alternative carrier seaplane design previews Fairey's durable, flexible aircraft and its recurring shortage of power.

Notes

The N.9 answered an Admiralty carrier-seaplane specification directly, while the N.10 was Fairey's larger experimental alternative. The N.10 combined folding wings with a 260-horsepower Sunbeam Maori engine and demonstrated what the company could do beyond a literal specification response. Its rugged, adaptable layout pointed toward the general-purpose aircraft for which Fairey became known. That layout also revealed a recurring weakness: proven engines made the aircraft dependable but often left too little power margin for future growth.
