Fairey Firefly combines strike, night, and anti-submarine roles

Firefly performance and payload figures illustrate the value of a versatile carrier aircraft in Korea-era operations.

Notes

The Firefly is treated as a Fulmar-like aircraft with many of the earlier type's shortcomings corrected, despite being a separate design. In fighter configuration it could reach about 386 mph, although its climb was noticeably slower than the Seafire's. Four 20 mm cannon, up to sixteen rockets, or 2,000 pounds of bombs gave it substantial striking power. Radar, radio, and night-flying equipment extended that usefulness into attack, suppression, and anti-submarine work, while its internal-fuel combat range was about 760 miles. The Firefly traded some interceptor performance for range, mission equipment, and a much broader set of carrier tasks.
