Why was the Fairey Barracuda withdrawn from British Pacific Fleet operations?
Short answerBecause other aircraft could provide the needed strike capability, allowing the Navy to act on the Barracuda's performance problems rather than continue managing them.
NotesOne performance flaw did not automatically remove the Barracuda. Other aircraft were already supplying the bombing and strike capacity the British Pacific Fleet required. Hot-weather performance and other technical niggles offered reasons to withdraw the type, but a navy can often manage such defects when it still needs the capability. Equipment remains in service when the user needs it, while accumulated shortcomings become decisive once the capability can be supplied elsewhere.
