Chapter ยท 22:37-25:36

Sea conditions and threats set hard constraints

Operating in harsh oceans or missile-threatened seas changes hull strength, endurance, and the protection a cruiser must carry.

Notes

Geography can dictate hull volume and structural strength as strongly as a weapons list. Ships intended for the high North Atlantic or South Atlantic must endure sustained high-speed operations in severe weather, which adds framing and weight. In more confined waters, a weak air- and missile-defence fit may require dependable outside air cover instead. The Type 23 refits illustrate the life-cycle cost of keeping a lightly structured ship in demanding service for longer than originally intended.
