Chapter · 1:25:22-1:30:05

Enterprise survives the second wave

Enterprise landed and reused as many aircraft as possible, then survived a second Japanese strike with damage that still allowed her to recover aircraft and remain operational.

Notes

Returning attackers located Enterprise after the rain squall cleared, allowing the second Japanese wave to concentrate on her. American fighters intercepted only two of nineteen incoming dive bombers. Two 250-kilogram semi-armor-piercing bombs killed 44 men, wounded 75, and jammed the forward elevator in its raised position, which still allowed use of the flight deck. Ten dive bombers were lost in the attack. The torpedo bombers arrived about twenty minutes later, sparing Enterprise the simultaneous attack that had overwhelmed Hornet. Their attacks on Enterprise, South Dakota, and Portland produced no torpedo damage because the weapons missed or failed. Enterprise brought her flight-deck and hangar fires under control and resumed recovery of returning aircraft by about 11:15.
