Complex systems can replace judgment but concentrate failure

Complex machinery can secure aircraft and reduce reliance on individual checks, but simpler arrangements can ease production and maintenance.

Notes

Simpler equipment could have allowed greater production than elaborate designs requiring more effort per item. In aircraft handling, a rail system keeps a machine securely in place once it is loaded onto the tracks. Tie-downs instead require sailors to check that each aircraft is properly secured. A complex mechanical system can therefore replace inspection work that good petty officers would otherwise perform, while concentrating dependence on particular mechanisms. A viewer offers the Bf 109's isolatable radiators as an example of complexity also providing robustness and redundancy. Such redundancy can be valuable while making maintenance more difficult.
