HMS Eagle's island was designed with the possibility of carrying a flag officer and staff, even though the accommodation was limited and seldom used. That makes the ship more than an early conversion example: she provides a visible reference for how a larger British carrier could combine flight control with squadron command. Eagle also supplies the model for an imagined Admiral-class or G3 conversion equipped as a carrier flagship. The island's size reflected command functions as well as funnels, navigation, and flight-deck operations.
