Compartmentation, cruising turbines, and a wide turn

Watertight subdivision and separated machinery supported survival and economical cruising, while the twin-rudder arrangement left a large tactical turning circle.

Notes

Sixteen bulkheads divided the hull into 17 watertight compartments, each sealed to the main deck with its own pumps and ventilation. The machinery-space bulkheads were strengthened to 20 mm, though this was hull steel rather than armour plate. Forward and after boiler groups served separate engine rooms and funnels, while cruising turbines on the inboard shafts produced the economical 5,000-nautical-mile radius. Two centreline rudders of different sizes left the ship with a large tactical turning circle. Subdivision and machinery separation supplied forms of resilience that the armour scheme did not.
