Steam turbines require carefully balanced blades and precise manufacture. High-pressure steam also complicates operation and crew training. Those demands support the proposed concentration on diesel warship machinery. Steam plants retain an advantage when machinery fails: other boilers can continue supplying a turbine, while boilers serving a disabled turbine can supply surviving turbines. Diesel engines are large, heavy pieces of machinery and do not duplicate that cross-supply arrangement. Multiple engines nevertheless provide their own form of redundancy.
