Deutschland provides an intermediate diesel benchmark

The Deutschland class links Bremse's early diesel machinery to the larger engines later planned for Z51, showing how much power Germany had already installed in a surface combatant.

Notes

The Deutschland-class cruisers displaced roughly 14,500 to 15,000 tons at full load and reached 28 knots. Eight diesels drove two shafts with about 53,260 shaft horsepower, or roughly 6,750 horsepower per engine. That output was already close to Bremse's estimated 7,100 horsepower per engine and came from ships built between 1929 and 1936. Deutschland therefore provides a practical development step between the early minelayer plant and the larger 12,600-horsepower engines planned for Z51.
