What advantage would Malta's deck-edge lifts offer as carrier aircraft became larger?
Short answerAircraft could overhang the ship's side while moving, and obsolete centerline lifts could later be removed to save weight and free hangar space.
NotesA deck-edge lift can move an aircraft whose wing or tail extends beyond the hull, so the platform is less constrained by the outline of an internal opening. Malta's pair of deck-edge lifts would therefore have helped the class accept larger postwar aircraft. If the centerline lifts later became too small, they could be removed rather than allowed to obstruct the flight deck and hangar. Removing them would save weight and recover internal space. Lift location can therefore create long-term modernization margin even before the exact future aircraft is known.
