The intended twin upper-deck 4.5-inch mount was still unavailable when Savage and the Battle class were designed. The interim approach used between-decks installations that took up space inside the ship. The twin upper-deck form promised high-angle fire without the same deck penetration. Its arrival with the Darings shows how long it took to put the desired mounting into service.
