A large destroyer with torpedoes, guns, and sensors could serve across more missions than a capital ship designed chiefly for battle-line combat. The Daring class could work in a light-cruiser role, escort carriers, and hunt submarines. That breadth gave the navy reasons to retain or develop the type across several different threat environments. Its heavy gun armament would also have offered valuable naval fire support during the Falklands War. One Daring's 4.5-inch battery would have equated to the fire support of six Type 42 destroyers.
