Cruiser turrets shared with coastal batteries

A cruiser could carry 8-inch guns in peace while using barbettes and magazines prepared for replacement 9.2-inch turrets.

Notes

A common barbette could accept either an 8-inch turret or a twin 9.2-inch mounting. Building the larger turrets for coastal batteries would put replacement weapons in service ashore before war. Common turret manufacture could also be defended as an economy that kept yards and industry working. Lifting out a whole turret and fitting another is judged less demanding than changing guns and breeches within the mounting. Magazines would need enough spare space for the larger shells. The proposal depends on designing that compatibility into the ship.
