Full-length flight decks for Courageous, Glorious, and Furious

A cluster of carrier questions connects deck length, conversion limits, and replacement timing.

Question

How would full-length flight decks and later refits affect Courageous, Glorious, and Furious?

Short answer

Longer decks improve takeoff margins, but Admiral-class carriers could make the older conversions expendable, and planned full-deck refits might be abandoned once Implacable-class ships arrived.

Notes

A longer flight deck gives aircraft more opportunity to become airborne before reaching the bow. That does not automatically justify retaining Courageous and Glorious if purpose-designed or larger Admiral-class carriers become available, and the older hulls might instead be discarded. Rapid hangar flooding remains a plausible model for how the conversions could be lost once water entered their large internal spaces. Although full-length decks were considered for Courageous, Glorious, and Furious, the impending Implacable class could make expensive refits poor value and push the older ships toward reserve.
