Why torpedo bombers and dive bombers diverged

Incompatible attack profiles and load requirements kept torpedo and dive-bombing roles separate in early naval aircraft.

Question

Could navies combine torpedo-bomber and dive-bomber roles in one aircraft from the outset?

Short answer

Not effectively at first, because the required weapons, structures, and attack profiles pull the aircraft design in different directions.

Notes

A torpedo aircraft must carry a long, heavy weapon and approach low and relatively slowly for release. A dive bomber instead needs the structure and handling to climb, dive steeply, and recover, so combining both without compromise was difficult until technology advanced.
