How carriers sequence damaged aircraft for recovery

Landing the most damaged aircraft first can block the deck, so carriers often recover safer aircraft while the damaged machine burns or dumps fuel.

Question

Can a carrier change aircraft recovery order to land the most damaged aircraft first?

Short answer

Yes, but it may be safer to land undamaged aircraft first so a crash does not block the deck and so the damaged aircraft can reduce its fuel load.

Notes

Recovery order is flexible, but the flight deck must remain usable for the whole returning group. A badly damaged aircraft that crashes first can block the landing area and strand every aircraft still airborne. The carrier may therefore recover safer aircraft and move them clear while the emergency aircraft burns or dumps fuel. With more than one carrier available, controllers can also divide the returning aircraft among decks to reduce the risk created by a single difficult landing.
