Would the Francesco Caracciolo class have exposed the Queen Elizabeths as a rushed and quickly surpassed design?
Short answerOn paper the Italian ships were formidable, but they were never completed, and British construction was moving fast enough that Agincourt or another successor could have entered service by the time they did.
NotesThe projected Francesco Caracciolo class looks impressive beside Queen Elizabeth, but the Italian ships were never completed. Their paper specifications cannot establish how the finished ships would have performed. British construction was also moving through successive designs, so a later British generation might already have been entering service when the Italian ships arrived. One tentative reconstruction gives Agincourt small-tube boilers, geared turbines, and six 18-inch guns. Eight guns in four twin turrets were fitted in a game construction exercise using a longer hull, which establishes a simulated possibility rather than a historical specification.
