Chapter ยท 2:21:09-2:28:10

Call to Arms makes repair capacity part of fleet readiness

A damaged battleship at a remote base exposes the tension among repair queues, spare parts, local capacity, and pressure to return to war.

Notes

Main shipyards can perform repairs faster because they have more people, but they also attract longer queues and more complicated jobs. A local yard offers another option, with its usefulness depending on its facilities and relationship with the armed forces. In Call to Arms, the remote base repairing Dauntless has low supply priority and must improvise replacements while better-placed ships receive scarce parts. Three crews already work around the clock, yet the captain demands departure in two weeks and adds the battleship's own engineers. The yard officer worries about combining different working practices so late in the project. Getting the ship back into service depends on supplies and coordination as well as the number of people assigned.
