Should the US Navy convert C-130s for carrier onboard delivery?
Short answerNo; trials showed that the aircraft monopolizes the flight deck and cannot carry an efficient load, while a purpose-built Greyhound fits the mission.
NotesA C-130 has demonstrated carrier takeoffs and landings, so the physical act is possible under controlled conditions. Routine use would require clearing much of the flight deck and disrupting normal air operations. Carrier constraints also prevent the Hercules from carrying its usual efficient load. The Navy would gain an oversized aircraft without obtaining its full transport value. A purpose-built C-2 Greyhound remains a better match, although the age and size of the Greyhound fleet created a separate replacement problem.
