What a second RFA Argus could have provided

The unused sister conversion illustrates why specialist roles often require more than one hull to remain reliably available.

Question

What would the Royal Fleet Auxiliary have gained by converting both Contender Bezant and Contender Argent into Argus-class ships?

Short answer

Two conversions would have provided more helicopter training and medical capacity, allowed alternating refits, and created more opportunities to support mine-warfare forces as motherships.

Notes

A second Argus-type ship would have expanded helicopter-training space and provided another rapidly deployable medical platform. Two hulls would also allow more regular refits while retaining a ship ready to respond. The number required depends on the role: some commitments need three or four ships to guarantee continuous availability. A supporting capability that can wait in harbor until called upon can sometimes manage with two. The additional hull would also create more opportunities to support mine operations as a mothership.
